Traslated to English bellow

Víctor Varela by Isis Infanzón del Cueto

Born in 1961 in the city of Havana, Varela studied painting at San Alejandro Academy and theatre at the National School of Dramatic Arts in Cuba. There, he was the undisputed leading figure of the theatre scene in the 1980s, as a playwright and director he assembled the company “Teatro del Obstáculo”, whose productions were widely admired on the international performance-theater circuit.
He is currently based in New York City where he is fully dedicated to providing his works with two-dimensional painting experience.
The old Marshall McLuhan's dictum that "the medium is the message" which marked the encounter of the media with the society of the spectacle, meant new lanes to Varela. When McLuhan said that a new cultural paradigm would be born with the presence of the information and communication in all areas of social life, Victor Varela says that “We live more technology than reality" - that is to say, interiorizing technology provides him a fruitful stimulus. The impact of new technology on the art of painting, the ensuing conflict with the dominating epistemological models, and the way those models are integrated posed new questions to him.

Through the architecture strong presence, his work reflects the structural analysis of the appearance in the current reality. In this way, he dematerializes the act of painting with a vivisection of the forms, his compositions are sui generis interpretations evolving urban landscapes of New York City, sometimes they are deliberately unfinished, and other times they are diffuse through the gaze of gloom and mist, or just bored into a gestural brushstroke. The molecular structure of matter disappears; its place is occupied by signs which replace organic chemistry: Electronic circuits instead of steel, sound waves, seismographs and electroencephalograms that create the typical skyline of big cities, voltage rather than water, figures rather than organs.

The production of artistic practices that arise due to differential media has relocated the object of art itself. The rise of technology not only questions the existence of reality, but also the painting itself as a medium.
Therefore, collage and mixed media do transcend the work but that is not actually important. Victor Varela’s inquiries lead us to pollute the experience.
What risk means for Varela emerges from his statement: “Man is for the risk, the “almost” unbearable risk of knowing, the beautiful risk of provoking its inherent epistemological limitations”. Building on the same approach as the artist embraces risk, that host unicycle riding on a tightrope in some of his works, welcomes the relationship between man and machine. This entails a conception of innocence as the underlying loss, unable to abandon certain hedonistic pleasure, and more fundamentally, perhaps innocence is also what gives life its true meaning.

With a language that is organically disposed to be ambiguous, half way between abstract and figurative art, the artists’ work can be received in the style of the “abstract-realism”. Varela, who creates a permanent dispute to deal with history, thinks that the work is neither sought nor found, but rather received. "Anyone who stops by my paintings has to rip one eye out and then may indeed, by showing its wiring, feel where I hide myself away”.

I am drowning in your tears of sadness

No habrá premonición. ¿Joseph Beuys o Marcel Duchamp? ¿Ready made o Arte Conceptual? ¿Andy Warhol o Wilfredo Lam? ¿Pop o surrealismo tropical?

Victor Varela    Foto e impreso on canvas
You got it?

                PAINT DEMATERIALIZATION

If dematerialize art is understood as the abandonment of the figure under full autonomy of expression could rediscover abstract painting at its most insane. Eating from the manca hand of Vasili Kandinsky served on a silver platter like fried chicken. Receive an attack without protocol and postwar cannibalism. A post modern and post hungry media. A shock to dry. A mythological nightmare to change a philosophy. Then we will have a query. So Dr. Freud after sleeping Oedipus’ child asked the blind Tiresias: - Who came up with Hispanics and Anglos serve a menu in braille letter if there was no blind? Feed us? Stump the artist? Then he will draw a piece of nail between the teeth with a toothpick. Good question, maybe 20 years ago when the eros of gnosis had enough force and vanity. But the soothsayer has not supported more of the same, the decoding of horror bores and fatigues him. He know every stone of life, every trip, every cruelty, every atom of discomfort. Without wishing to work on a sunny Sunday afternoon would prefer not to see, sink into the peace of brutality, its fecund darkness. "The hand is everything to the painter" - will tell us met behind the reinforced steel security door, closed with triple key and double back in internal organs: the liver and pancreas. Will hammer something (our graves?) And shut up forever, angrily. There will be no premonition. Then we'll be alone once more to add in the midst of silence, of learned ignorance, a belch yellow the pictures digestion of catharsis. Whoever sends us. Not eating a piece of artist in vain. Wing or breast? Stump or Hand? Why God, at this point we have not learned that art is always going to rag on the edges thinner boundary always learn something old? I hope that in the midst of so much indifference and sleaze at least we left a bit of cynicism, an elbow and a band of hope, a soldier in the bone brush, a kind of melting man - art, the instrument as an organ. Have we shouted, slightly intuited lifestyle of the beast, but we will be far from artistic antimatter.

Victor Varela       Acrilico, carboncillo e impreso en canvas
Such status will not be possible until after renouncing his recovery time, which will be a no space controlled and white hole. With a can and a stick will announce our next ghost. He will be bicephalous and German Franco, also Cuban-American. Come to teach us what is the materiality not as if he was familiar. Two by two, bipolar, tell us which includes painting itself as a medium. Josehp? Beuys and Marcel Duchamp? Ready? Made or Conceptual Art? Andy? Warhold or Wilfredo Lam? Pop or tropical surrealism?? "Vincent spends his life talking about parrots." Cold. Ice cream. Take away the impostor. Condemn him to perpetually use your own costume and put it to plant noses in a house of culture. Your imagination prudish well conditioned not fly. As a clay pigeon has soaked flapping in the dry mud. Improvising on the rock. Maybe paint the painting, sculpting sculpture, photograph photography, working with the purest raw materials we clarify something. Delusion. That way we will know only the precipitous drop. Best we take a break and rave us. Contrary to all expectations a dematerialization of painting is only possible through the realization of the form: a return to the brush to easel painting. Such back crossed by the sign technological contaminated him could combine all means that the medium itself has derived under an uncomfortable tessitura, the circuit, but undoubtedly beautiful, consistent with the times and authentic. Photography and pigment printed and original, abstraction and figure, oil and acrylic, canvas and paper, watercolor and charcoal, chalk and accident, ink and chaos. Collage? Maybe. What about the psychological profile? Engineering in the art?? Kafka? No, George Baselitz hanging upside down in one of his canvases, announcing the entry of Anselm Kiefer as Parcifal in a cradle and Damien Hirst with his diamond skull, Francis Bacon also the teacher. But this what is it? Where is the dead for souch carrion? Will I have to take a vacation? Travel to the past? To graze in the Vermeer of Delft study? And what if I'm going to my house and insert a microchip nicely painted in the canvas. Go through the wire cloth fabric with a hair transistor. Does the new realism may then reign, take a dip in the forms farthest from its tradition emerge strongly stained and integrated? Nothing counter culture and psychedelic. Info aesthetic and self portrait. Binary code and tattoo. Brand incandescent and destination. No more damage to the artist. No more starving artist. The dirty paint will come to stay in the possibility of barbarism and my heart. You got it?
